What is an IMO Jaguar Drive?

  • VSD Drive

In essence, a VSD drive is used to control the speed of machinery, most specifically those that are developed to handle different product lines and therefore must operate under varying conditions depending on the processes involved. As you’d expect, every VSD drive manufactured by IMO Precision Controls is designed and developed to ensure the smoothest acceleration control possible, which in turn allows our customers to improve their industrial procedures, ensure maximum quality control and save time at every stage of manufacture.
In the past, variable speed drives were developed mainly for process control purposes, however, energy conservation has fast become an equally important advantage. A variable speed drive uses less energy than an alternative fixed speed mode of operation. Here at IMO, we strive to provide our customers with high quality products that are not only affordable, but are built to last, with a range of additional benefits. An adjustable speed drive also offers further benefits such as allowing more accurate positioning, smoother operation and acceleration control.
The encyclopaedia definition of an inverter is: an inverter is an electrical or electro-mechanical device that converted direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC); the resulting AC can be at any required voltage and frequency with the use appropriate transformers, switching and control circuits.
IMO define our Jaguar Drive as a product with over twenty five years continuous innovation and today's range, comprising of single and three phase CUB and VXR series from 0.4kW and VXM series up to 500kW, the IMO Jaguar Drive remains at the forefront of frequency inverter technology.

And boasting the largest stock of AC drives in the country, backed as always by our five year guarantee, our customers can be confident that IMO can deliver.
Within the UK there is an estimated 10 million electric motors running fans and pumps of all sizes. Each individual one might not sound like a lot but add them all together and it is easy to see that collectively, they are the biggest users of electricity in industry today. Can you imagine the energy that would be saved if we could improve the efficiency of each of these units by just 1%?
To explain how much energy can be saved we will use pump and fan applications as an example, because
    a) there are so many of them
    b) they have the greatest energy saving potential.
If you reduce the speed of a conveyor belt using a variable speed drive from 100% to 80%, then you save 20% of the energy. If you apply the same theory to a pump, you would actually be saving a massive 50% of the energy.

    How is this possible?

A conveyor belt is a constant torque application. The torque requirement throughout the speed range is the same, constant. The current to produce torque is relatively constant and just the voltage and the power vary with the speed. This means 80% speed requires 80% power.
Fans and pumps on the other hand are variable torque applications, meaning the need for torque and current increases with the square of the speed. The voltage also varies in proportion to the speed, so power actually varies in proportion to the cube of the speed. So if we reduce the speed by a given percentage, the power reduces by the cube of the speed change. So 80% speed results in (0.8)3 = 51% power.
So even just an 11kW motor running 16hrs/5 days/50 weeks can typically cost £2900pa in electricity costs (based on 6p/kWh and 92% efficiency at full load). Just a 10% reduction can reduce energy costs by £700+ this equates to a typical payback in well under two years.
With the IMO Jaguar five year guarantee and a 10 year lifetime design can you afford not to discover how the IMO Jaguar Drive can help you and your business save energy and money?
(Please note these calculations only provide estimated figures).
