A variable-frequency drive (VFD) is a system that controls the rotational speed of an alternating current (AC) of electric motor by controlling the frequency of the electrical power supplied to the motor.
Example: in a office tower with central air conditioning plant
Without VFD, the motor of the central air conditioning plant is running at full capacity (100%) but when the VFD controls the motor, it can reduce effectively the power consumption in the office tower by changing the motor speed frequency when the power demand decreases.
