What does it mean to be committed to sustainable productivity? At Atlas Copco productivity is at the forefront of all our business activities; it means helping our customers get more out of every investment.
One of the most important drivers affecting productivity and subsequently lifecycle cost is energy efficiency. Typically in terms of our products lifecycle cost, energy represents up to 80% of the total investment, especially considering air compressors. While compressed air systems on average account for about 10% of industrial electricity consumption, it can be as high as 40% of a plant's electricity bill. For these reasons, Atlas Copco has been innovating for energy-efficient solutions for many years. This has resulted in some of the most innovative and efficient air and power systems on the market today.
There are many ways to increase efficiency and productivity. Directly through technological innovations or indirectly through greater reliability, longer maintenance intervals, eliminating the risk of product contamination and recalls. Our history of energy efficient innovations reaffirms our commitment to sustainable productivity.
Atlas Copco was the first to offer a certified 'net zero energy consumption' air compressor - the Carbon Zero range. The built-in energy recovery systems in the ZR range are the first in the world to be TÜV-certified for 'net zero energy consumption', where it had been proven and independently verified that 100% of the electrical power input could be recovered in the form of hot water. This is most beneficial to those industries with a constant need for hot water and steam in their processes.
We were also the first manufacturer to offer TÜV-certified 100% oil-free compressed air, setting a new industry standard for air purity ISO 8573-1 Class 0, which safeguards industries processes and end products. Industries who risk contaminating their products with oil may expose themselves to product recalls, legal action and the negative consequence these have on a company's reputation and brand equity. 100% oil-free air also minimizes your maintenance cost and frequency as you no longer have to change oil filters.
Atlas Copco was also the first manufacture to offer air compressors powered with our innovative VSD (Variable Speed Drive) technology. Through varying the speed of the drive motor, the compressor output closely mirrors the air consumption over a wide range, without load-unload switching, meaning that fluctuating demand no longer means high energy costs. This results in an average energy saving of at least 35% and a reduction in overall lifecycle cost by 22%.
Our FuelXpert™ technology intelligently regulates the engine speed and air intake of our portable diesel-driven compressors, optimizing fuel consumption. This results in direct savings of 10%. It has been estimated that is all Atlas Copco's portable compressors were fitted with the FuelXpert™ option we would save more than 150 million liters of fuel per year.
Indirectly, regular maintenance not only keeps your production process running at its peak efficiency but can also significantly reduce your operating costs. Maintenance typically accounts for only 10% of the total lifecycle cost of an air compressor, whereas electricity alone can account for as much as 80%. A well planned maintenance program with regular servicing can significantly improve the energy efficiency of your compressed air or power system and drive down your operating costs.
Despite the exceptional reliability of Atlas Copco systems, the replacement of filters or lubricants, the periodic check of moving components and even a planned major overhaul are vital to ensure reliable efficient performance. Reactive interventions cannot avoid the cost of production losses caused by a breakdown which are often much more costly as you may have to replace, rather than repair major components. Atlas Copco's service plans are not only the lowest cost and most reliable solution in the long run but are very easy to budget for; as there are no surprises.
Atlas Copco aftermarket services are not limited to maintenance. True peace of mind only comes about in the knowledge that your compressed air or power system is optimally sized, installed, maintained and operating efficiently. Atlas Copco's air audits, remote monitoring and energy optimization solutions perfectly compliment our service plans.
For the fifth consecutive year, Atlas Copco has been named one the World's most sustainable companies. The Global 100 list of the world most sustainable corporations was announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
